Smokey eye tutorial: Classic

Products used: Primer - Urban Decay Primer Potion Eyeshadow: MAC Blanc Type, Sephora 5th Avenue - dark gray matte, MAC Typographic, MAC Mylar, Urban Decay - Naked Liner - UD 24/7 liner - Perversion MAC Chromaline - NC20/NW15 Lashes - L'Oreal Voluminous mascara- Carbon Black
I did a quick base on my skin for the sake of the tutorial. Generally, I would do my eyeshadow first and then do my base after, unless I was using light colors or shadows which don't have much fallout.
The Brushes I'll be using
I use a Sigma E60, but any large brush will do.
Sigma E45 is my favorite tapered blending brush.

A MAC 217 and a Sigma E25 are the blending brushes I use.

I also like Sigma E35 for blending.

This is a paint brush, but I love it. I am all for buying brushes made for paining for makeup (if they are nice enough/soft enough to be used on the eye area), however, NEVER use a brush that has been used in paint on your face EVER.

E30 is a good pencil brush.

Classic smokey eye
Prep your lids with your favorite primer. I am using Urban Decay Primer Potion.
I swiped Mac blanc type (cream shadow close to my skin color) from last to brow with a Sigma E60.

Brush along the lashline a dark matte gray, I am using Sephora 12th Ave, and then slightly into the crease. I will be using a Sigma E45 for applying the gray.

To blend I use a Sigma E25/MAC 217, blending in small circles.

Brush a taupe/medium brown from lashline to just below the brow bone. I am using Urban Decay Naked.

Blend the brown into the gray and also blend upward.

Another layer of gray and blend.

Add more dark gray.

Tip! For those will hooded eyes like mine, you should be especially mindful to look directly into the mirror to make sure that the color is blended above your natural crease, so that it is visible when your eye is open.

Blend. You'll have to blend after every step for a seamless look.

Added another layer of taupey brown and blend.

Use a pencil brush to run the taupey brown under the lash line

Add the gray on top of the taupey brown.
Blend the two colors together.

Add a highlight to the browbone and inner corner. I am using MAC Mylar.
Add a nude liner on the waterline and black liner on the upper waterline/tightline. I use Urban Decay liner in Perversion and MAC Chromaline pencil in NC15/NW20. PSA: If you add liner on the lid, well whatever, you can do that-- but DO NOT call it a smokey eye if you add winged liner to this look, pretty please. Liner = not a true smokey eye.

Curl your lashes and add some mascara and you're done!
